I used to do this all the time. You can take a bobber and put a fly on the end, then attach the bobber a few feet above the fly. The bobber will add weight to your cast and then the fly will act like a fly on the water.
If I was fishing in a creek, I would just take my light-weight pole, and not use any weight, just float the fly out there and let line out, just like floating bait
