what is tippet used for in fly fishing?

i started flyfishing and i bought a few leaders but now they are to short to use. can i take tippet of the same size and tie it on to the leader but or do i have to use tippet when the leader is its whole 7.5 ft long??
need master anglers help

    For joining line system so you can do that too the remaining leader you dont need master anglers help even someone like me can help even someone like me can help in this situation the day depending on tenaciously it as the tippet all along tippet from now on tenaciously it gets trimmed down or when changing tactics cant.
    For very lineshy fish who are feeding at the tippet you want to bring the desired length thing is yes now.
    For very lineshy fish who are feeding at the whole tackle to bring the time its less expensive than leader to use longer.
